The Litany of the the Holy Name of Jesus

Wash drawing by an italian Sister [no date].

To stand united to God, Mother Thérèse was using small pieces of paper she pulled from a bag during her sewing work. She had written invocations to the Holy Name of Jesus on it. The first draft of this prayer would have been written by St. Bernardine of Siena and St. John of Capistrano, two Franciscans. The litany was approved in 1862 by Pope Pius IX (the pope who approved the Congregation in 1863). Mother Thérèse’s version repeats some of the invocations.

For more information on the use of this litany by Mother Thérèse, see the booklet of the 150th anniversary of Self-Surrender.
