She will bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.” (…) When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.

Preparation

Lord, you invite me to walk the path to Bethlehem. Grant me the grace of Joseph’s silent and active trust. May he teach me to listen to your voice in the dreams of my life and to respond to it with faith.

Setting

I imagine Joseph’s workshop in Nazareth, or his little room at night. I smell the wood, the sawdust, the oil from the lamp. I observe Joseph as a working man; his hands are calloused, but his heart is tormented. He is in darkness, not only at night, but also in doubt and incomprehension. Then I look at the soft light of the dream, the soothing and clear words of the angel.

Contemplation

I look at Joseph, faced with a mystery beyond him that could lead him to reject it. I observe God speaking to him in the secrecy of the night, in the intimacy of his heart. I listen to the invitation to trust: “Do not be afraid.” These are the same words spoken to Mary. This invitation is not a scientific explanation. I reflect on Joseph’s faith, which consists in accepting a truth that comes from elsewhere and conforming his life to it. His “yes” is not spoken with words, but with an act: “he did as the angel commanded him.” He gets up and takes care of Mary and the Child.

And me? What are the shadowy areas in my life where I find it difficult to see clearly? The situations where I am afraid, where I feel overwhelmed? Do I take the time to be silent and listen to the voice of God, who calms me and shows me the next step? Am I able to translate my faith into concrete actions, even small ones, without waiting to understand everything?

Colloquy

I speak to Joseph: “Saint Joseph, guardian of the Redeemer, look upon my fears and doubts. You who protected Jesus, protect my faith. Teach me to act according to God’s will, even in silence and humility. Show me how to be a faithful and just servant.”

Resolution for the week

Identify a situation or relationship that troubles or frightens me.
