A bit of vocabulary
Adult baptism is preceded by a period of preparation (2 years or more) which allows the convert to deepen his faith: this is the catechumenate and the future baptised person is a catechumen.
Togo
Originally from Madagascar, Sister Emilienne has been living the Cenacle mission in Togo for 18 years. She is a catechist at our spiritual centre in Vogan. She accompanies catechumens from the first to the fourth year and visits their families.
In her mission of accompanying God-seekers, Sister Emilienne is confronted with deeply rooted popular beliefs, even among Christians. Traditional animism, the second most widespread religion among the population (37%), after Christianity (42%), plays an important role. This belief, which attributes a spirit to living beings, objects and natural elements, has a strong influence on the religious life of the Togolese. Many Christians incorporate elements of folk religion into their religious practices.
To respond to these cultural and spiritual realities, Sister Emilienne has had to deepen her understanding of the particularities of the Church in Togo. This work of discernment enables her to best accompany those in search of God. In Togo, baptisms are generally celebrated in adulthood, and it is Sister Emilienne who guides the future baptized in their faith journey.

France
In Marseille, Sister Martine lives the mission of the Cenacle in the pastoral care of the parish of Bienheureux Jean-Baptiste Fouque. In particular, she is responsible for the two-year catechumenate program.
In her mission to accompany God-seekers, Sister Martine is faced with a sudden increase in the number of catechumens in France (+28% in 2023, +30% in 2024). During this year’s Easter Vigil, 17,788 teenagers and adults were baptized. In 2023, there were 8,376*. This growth is characterized by two main trends: younger and younger catechumens, and catechumens farther and farther from any Christian culture. The Church of France must therefore adapt quickly to this new reality.
Within the parish, it was necessary to quickly organize a team to lead the monthly meetings and accompany each young person individually. As many catechumens are unfamiliar with the Christian faith, it’s important not to explain everything at once, but rather to focus on the symbols and essential elements of the faith. Convivial moments, such as ending meetings with a meal, are much appreciated by catechumens.
The Cenacle community, which lives in the presbytery next to the church, plays a key role in welcoming these new parishioners, offering them an open and welcoming face of the Church.

Singapore
A native of Singapore, Sister Kriz lives the mission of the Cenacle in this city-state with two Filipina sisters.
As part of their mission to accompany seekers of God, Sister Kriz and the sisters of the community have been called upon to accompany the ministry of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RICA) in several parishes.
The RCIA is a year-long program of religious formation offered to people who wish to enter the Church through Baptism and prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. The future baptized are gradually introduced to the aspects of the Catholic faith, beliefs and practices. In Singapore, the Cenacle makes itself available to parishes for the spiritual accompaniment of catechumens, particularly during the retreat preceding baptism. This is an opportunity to fully develop the Cenacle’s charism: helping each individual to form a personal relationship with God and taste his love.
