Our Mission
“With confidence in the abiding and transforming presence of the Holy Spirit in the world, we participate in the spiritual renewal of the human heart.” (Constitutions No 12)
The Cenacle Mission has an integrated three-fold dimension:
Ministry
Through our various ministries (spiritual accompaniment, retreats, catechesis and other spiritual apostolates), we strive to develop a culture of encounter and dialogue, giving witness to the reign of God in our midst.
We offer a spirit of welcome and hospitality to all peoples, respecting the dignity and distinctiveness of each person as an expression of the Goodness of our Creator God. We try to create an environment that can help each one to be open to a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. Then, “as they grow in their knowledge and love of the Lord, we encourage them to respond to the challenge of the Gospel in their personal and family lives, and in their professional and civic responsibilities,” (Constitutions No 8), thus promoting the common good and the care of our common home.
“Impelled by love of Christ and concern for a world in need of this message, we give ourselves with all our strength to making the Gospel known so that it may become a source of life for everyone.”
Constitutions No 6
Alert to the signs of the times, not least the deep cultural transformations, the cry of the poor and of those on the peripheries, as well as the impacts of climate change, violence and global instability, and the call of the universal Church to live a Synodal Church, we strive to go out to meet our contemporaries wherever they are.
We accompany them in their search for meaning, for God, listening non-judgementally to them, with open minds and open hearts, engaging and learning about the issues that impact their lives and faith. It is only through this attentive listening and compassionate presence that we can discern together how the Holy Spirit wants all of us to participate in creating a “future filled with the joy of the Gospel” (Pope Francis to the Synod of Bishops on Young People 2018).
“We can continue this mission only by being rooted (as our founders, Fr. Stephen Terme and Thérèse Couderc were) in a deep interior life based on faith, humility and a charity which expresses itself in untiring zeal.”
Constitutions No 3
Prayer
“Prayer should be our daily support”
Thérèse Couderc, letter of August 3, 1863
Prayer, which is at the centre of the mystery of the Cenacle, permeates our lives. Our Mission is nourished and sustained by our personal and community prayer. Our daily contemplation of the Word of God is essential for the ongoing discovery and understanding of the Mystery of the Incarnation. Pondering it in the silence of the heart (Lk 2:19), we try to surrender ourselves to its action and be led by the Spirit to pass it on to others.
As pilgrims and companions in the Lord, deeply rooted in our Cenacle charism and the Eucharist, gathered together in communities of faith, we journey together, with others, sharing our faith in the Risen Christ and our faith in the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit.
Contemplating Mary, Our Lady of the Cenacle, “who incarnates what we are called to be as Cenacle Sisters” (Constitutions No 37), we ask her to intercede for us that “we may be always animated by the Spirit of her Son, Jesus Christ” in our search for ways to make the Gospel relevant to the people of our time.
Community Life
“The atmosphere of our communities should recall that of the first Cenacle.”
Constitutions No 36
Our community life is rooted in our common vision, mission and passion for Jesus Christ, who has called each one to take a unique part in his mission of proclaiming God’s love for all of His creation.
We place in common, all that we are and all that we have, our gifts, our limits, our frailties and vulnerabilities, our joys and sorrows, our hopes and dreams, for the service of the mission. In a climate of love, compassion, humility, forgiveness and peace, we support and encourage one another on our pilgrim journey, allowing God’s love to transform our hearts, lives and communities in order to become authentic witnesses to the transforming power of the Gospel.
