In this extraordinary Easter season, as a sister of the Congregation and General Councillor, it seems to me that the Risen Christ desired to use Pope Francis’ exquisite outpouring of self to the end to leave the Church and the world breathless. This gave way to greater awe in the simplicity, humility, gratitude, and saintly grandeur of the homage paid to him during the visitation of his body and funeral, which continues to resound in me, like the tolling bells of St. Peter’s…
I am moved that our five sisters preparing for final vows could join members of our Generalate Community in being present in Rome for these unforgettable experiences. I marvel at how Francis’ values and brave stances around synodality, ecology, and presence to the marginalized found expression in our Acts of the Chapter 2022 in ways that are only becoming clearer and deeper for us as a Congregation over time.
In all this, I ponder the elusive, tangible presence of the Risen Christ, who never seeks to impose, but to walk with us and surprisingly reveal himself, often when we least expect it. As he comforts us in our loss of such a courageous, inspiring leader, he beckons us not only to admire Francis’ legacy but to take it up. As people of the Upper Room, the Risen Christ stirs us to join Mary in praying for the illumination of the Spirit for the Conclave and in welcoming our new Pope and this time of new birth in the life of the Church as “Pilgrims of Hope.”
