I arrived at Ignatius Retreat Center in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon eager to accompany four women in their five-day individually directed retreats. When I discovered that one among them only spoke French, the native language in Congo, I asked the other retreat directors if they spoke French. Alas! Not one of them spoke nor understood French. And so, I prayed to the Holy Spirit for the ability of conversing in French with Emma as best I could.
Our first session together on Monday morning surprised me with an unexpected ‘miracle.’ Immediately after our prayer, Emma pulled her cell phone out of her tote bag and began to show me how AI (Artificial Intelligence) would enable us to converse with each other. Believe it or not, this was true! AI allowed us to communicate effectively with each other without trouble. When Emma spoke, AI translated her words to English. When I spoke, AL translated my words to French. I could not believe my eyes as I read the translations on the cell screen! With the assistance of AL, Emma’s and my conversation revolved around her prayer, experiences, emotions, and reflections. All done peacefully and comfortably in a quiet and contemplative atmosphere.
I dare to admit AI reminded me of the power of prayer and the universality of God’s grace which transcends language barriers. It has certainly shown me AI can be used as a valuable tool for communication. Although I was initially discontented about using AI, I am beginning to consider its benefits.
I wonder how AI might impact on our lives and our ministries. Perhaps one day we will see ourselves accompanying folks on their spiritual journeys across borders, regardless of their native language and ours. Alleluia!
