Women’s religious orders in North America are together facing big challenges. Most are experiencing diminishment of numbers, aging membership and properties that are too big to manage and staff.
The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) are working hard and creatively. They bring together women who have leadership roles to pray and explore together about the future of religious life in North America. Together, sisters ask how God might be inviting this remnant to serve the needs of God’s people today.
The Cenacle sisters in North America participate in the LCWR meetings and also meet together to address our own questions, needs and realities that we must have new structures and living situations. We have participated in processes and times of prayer over several years that helped us make major difficult decisions about our retreat facilities and living situations. We have also, with God’s grace, deepened our community bonds. At the end of our recent gathering, we have begun a new consideration of how we shall live and minister given the realities of our present personnel.
At the conclusion of our recent meeting one of us quipped: “We don’t know where we are going, but we are going together and with God’s promised company and help.”
