‘My soul exalts the Lord, my spirit exults in God, my Saviour!’
Our hearts were filled with joy! What a beautiful day we spent in this village where everything began for our Congregation…
The day began at 8 am when we boarded the bus at Le Châtelard (Lyon, France), where two international meetings of our Congregation are currently taking place. Where to? Lalouvesc! In other words, the village where the Congregation of Our Lady of the Retreat in the Cenacle was founded to provide spiritual guidance to people who had come on pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint Régis.
Once there, we were lucky enough to have mass in the basilica that houses the relics of Saint Régis and the body of our foundress, Saint Thérèse Couderc. The liturgy for the occasion was that of Pentecost. We invoked the descent of the Spirit to bless the work that had been completed and that which would begin the next day.
The votive mass to the Holy Spirit was simple but beautiful, with the participation of sisters from different parts of the world, through readings and songs in different languages.
During the offertory procession, Sr Véronique, Superior General, carried the number of grains of wheat representing the number of Cenacle sisters today. One of the youngest sisters present, Sr Victorine, carried the wine and Sr Susan, the senior of the group, carried the bread.
“unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat but if it dies, it produces much fruit”
John 12:24 in the mass for the feast of Saint Thérèse Couderc
The most moving moment was when, at the end of mass, we gathered around the shrine of our foundress to recite Mother Thérèse’s act of offering prayer, read in English and French.
After lunch, we had the opportunity to make our individual pilgrimages to the sources of the Congregation. Each of us was able to spend as much time as we wished beside the body of Mother Thérèse to entrust our mission to her, as well as before the relics of Jean-François Régis to ask him for his apostolic zeal. We also visited the chapel where the saint died, the Saint-Régis Museum and the miraculous fountain.
It was also an opportunity for small groups to tour our Maison des Sources (Heritage House) Museum. In this house that the Congregation keeps in the village, the French Sisters guided our discovery of objects and documents that evoke our founders and the life of our first sisters.
What a thrill it was to plunge back into our beginnings and to drink from the very source of our origins. Unfortunately, we soon had to leave again to continue our meetings near Lyon the next day.
